Mother-daughter talent team to premiere at Sacramento Comicon
AJ’s Mad Hattery & Rue de la Mort Jewelry Skilled Milliner AJ Pickard and her jewelry-designer daughter Casey Saumure premier their joined Cosplay accessories at Sacramento Comicon. AJ Pickard began creating high-quality top hats for her church’s Mad Hatter Tea Parties. Inspired on a trip through New Orleans to create Voodoo, Cosplay, Steampunk, Post-apocalyptic and Halloween-themed mini top hats. The wild hats were the most popular. AJ’s daughter, Casey got married in a Virginia City cemetery. The hunt for Victorian bustle gown and mini top hat inspired her progeny to create what she calls “Jewelry from the dark side.” Casey Saumure began creating creepy jewelry for fun. Skeletons, zombies, ouija boards and circus freaks-if it was dark, Casey wanted a piece of it. The two combined their skills naturally to create fabulous pieces. After last-years wildly successful Comicon hit Sacramento, her daughter suggested they join forces in Artist’s Alley. “These aren’t your church hats”, AJ smiles. “You can’t wear a Ouija board necklace everywhere.” We like wild. I knew Comicon would appreciate us.” The mother-daughter team can be found in Artist’s Alley at Comicon Sacramento on June 19-21st at the Sacramento Convention Center. I married the love of my life in a cemetery. People asked “Why would you marry in a graveyard?” Thank Ghost Adventures for that. But first, some background. We kept putting off getting married. As small business owners, we were ever-afraid of running out of cash. One business, one child, several homes and 17 years later, we still hadn’t gotten it together. The sudden and tragic death of my first husband, on his birthday no less, caused us to really stop and think. His grieving betrothed of over 20 years couldn’t even collect his remains. She was frozen out of the bank accounts and evicted from her home. I couldn’t imagine anything more horrible than to grieve and be removed from everything you loved, and everything that reminded you of the person you loved.
My husband swore that would never happen to me. We swiftly made plans to elope. Reno is a popular quickie wedding destination. Knowing my love of all things ghostly, he queued up an episode of Ghost Adventures at the Haunted Washoe Club in Virginia City, NV. The wedding inspiration was born there. Our wedding pictures were shot inside all 3 floors of the Haunted Washoe. Our incredible photographer, Craig Marshall used stop-motion photography to shoot our favorite ‘Ghost Dancing’ scene. Yes, the same room, (the upstairs ballroom) where Ghost Adventures filmed a full-body apparition walking against the back wall. Our ceremony was held in The Comstock Cemetery. There were 4 weddings scheduled there that day. So once again, we weren’t so odd after all. Just a minister, a witness, a photographer, God and us. We missed our family. But it was a beautiful, haunting, relaxing and selfish day. We did it quickly and without stress. We did it exactly liked we wanted. Thank you John Bernet 1964-2013, for one last word of advice. And thank you Ghost Adventures for the venue.
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. Ay, you shall be together, even in the silent memory of God. But let there be spaces in your togetherness. And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. -Kahlil Gabran
My jewelry will raise a few eyebrows. I’ve always been fascinated by the dark and macabre. Now before you fire & brimstone folks get all hopped up on devil worship mish-mash, let me clarify. I was raised a Catholic. I love GOD. I take comfort in my religion. My guardian angels -through God’s holy light have guided me through near-death experiences, grief, and life altering illness. As well as the trauma’s and drama’s of everyday life.
I also believe that if you believe in GOOD, you must believe in EVIL. How after all, can there be one without the other? I wanted people to look at my pieces and say, “What is wrong with you?”. And I also wanted them to say, “That’s really cool.” To the latter my audience. To the first -Off you go to bible thump somewhere else. Graveyards are peaceful places, full of beauty. The thought of death a touchstone-if you will. A way to pause and ask yourself, what will my Eulogy read? What have I contributed to this planet? Never so alive as near death.
It started with Tales From The Darkside and of course Twilight Zone. Rosemary’s Baby and The Shining were watched to extinction. The quick dark wit of House of Yes is a must watch for all new family members. I love altered reality to give us perspective. And I really loved the adrenaline rush of being scared and laughing at the same time. Later, fantastic shows came up like, Six Feet Under, Dexter and American Horror Story. And of course my all time go to’s, Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal State, Paranormal Witness and my beloved Dead Files. If that many shows are this popular, I figured, then I must not be that odd after all.
